Extra-duty employment is department-approved employment for entities outside the Chandler Police Department where the potential use of law enforcement powers is anticipated.  All extra-duty employment is coordinated through the Chandler Police Department Extra Duty Coordinator at (480) 782-4204.

Extra Duty – Letter of Agreement August 2020

You have requested the use of Chandler Police Officers to work at your business in the capacity of security or traffic. This information is to inform you of the officer’s scope of authority as it pertains to your business.

Some of the jobs off duty officers typically do are:

  • Traffic control at constructions sites
  • Security at restaurants
  • Security at various businesses
  • Traffic control at various churches
  • Security at various school functions

Persons/businesses scheduling extra-duty work must sign a contract and pre-pay the entire cost of the job.  The only exception is for businesses that routinely schedule extra-duty assignments and billing is provided upon completion of the job.

Advance notice of at least 48 hours is required for the hiring of an officer.

24 hours’ written notice is required in order to cancel a job.  Officers who have responded to the station or job site for duty that are subsequently cancelled will be paid for 2 hours show-up times, which is the responsibility of the hiring party.

The officer’s current rate of pay is $57.51 per hour with a two hour minimum.  If four or more officers are requested for the job, a supervisor is required.  The supervisor’s current rate of pay is $75.84 per hour with a two hour minimum.

The City of Chandler also requires all persons/businesses utilizing extra duty employment to pay $2.50 per hour per officer for the Worker’s Compensation Fee.  If a patrol vehicle is requested the cost is $6.00 per hour per vehicle.  Both fees are in addition to the officer’s hourly rate and must be made payable to the City of Chandler and mailed to the following address:

Routine Businesses:

Invoices are prepared and sent for work completed to companies that routinely utilize extra-duty services.  Checks are requested for payment.  CHECKS MUST BE MADE OUT TO THE OFFICERS INDIVIDUALLY.

Payments must be received by Chandler Police Department within fifteen (15) days of the invoice date.  Payments received after fifteen (15) days are considered late.  Further City of Chandler TCP (Traffic Control Plan) requests will not be approved for any contractor with outstanding late invoice(s).

All other persons/businesses:

Individuals or private entities who request officers for extra duty services must pre-pay by money order for the requested hours of service.  The Payee line of the money order needs to be left blank, the Extra Duty Coordinator will complete it once officer is assigned job.  Payments must be made at least three business days before the event or the risk of officer unavailability increases.  Off duty jobs are assigned to officers on a rotational basis.

Off duty jobs will be worked in uniform unless otherwise approved by the Division Commander.

Officers will not be allowed to work outside the Chandler city limits.
