Is a Law Enforcement Career for Me?

It has often been said that a police officer holds a truly noble profession.  A clear understanding of our profession would encourage most people to agree.  A police officer is a citizen who knowingly chooses to accept the responsibility of enforcing the laws of society with the purpose of ensuring the rights and safety of every citizen within the community.  This purpose requires officers to hold themselves steadfast to the great morals of mankind – honesty, integrity, justness, selflessness, and compassion are but a few.  Officers willingly subject themselves to the watchful eye and scrutiny of the community in order to maintain public trust and confidence.

The true purpose of policing will require officers to perform many tasks, the majority of which are personally rewarding.  Officers will know their job is worthwhile after helping a citizen with even the smallest need.  Officers will know their job has purpose after assisting citizens with dire needs.  Officers will know their job is vital after protecting citizens from those who would seek to prey upon the community.

Aspects of police-work will, at times, test an officer’s strength, courage, and intelligence.  Departments take care in the training of officers to ensure they are given the knowledge, experience, and equipment to successfully overcome most challenges.  Even with the safeguards, an officer understands and accepts the very real dangers that accompany the profession.

While a career in law enforcement has always been personally rewarding, officers today can enjoy competitive wages and excellent benefits.  Some of the benefits garnered while working as a police officer include ample vacation time, compensatory time, college tuition re-imbursement, medical coverage, retirement health savings plan, and a pension after twenty years of service.  The City of Chandler remains competitive with other Valley agencies and boasts several national recognition awards pertaining to community growth, development, diversity, and quality of life.
