Chandler has joined other Valley communities in using photo enforcement to reduce the rate of red light running offenses and accidents.
From 1996 to 1998, the City had nearly 10,000 accidents at intersections where there are traffic signals. Many of these accidents are attributed to motorists running red lights, with more than 80 percent of those resulting in injuries. Twenty-four people died of their injuries.
Chandler’s Red Light Photo Enforcement Program is a direct response to these tragic facts. While the Police Department does a great job to make Chandler streets safe, the red light camera program provides round-the-clock monitoring of intersections where accidents occur most frequently. Offenders have the option of paying a fine or paying a fee to attend traffic school. Citations are printed with photographic records of the offense so drivers can see the record personally.
