Killed in the Line of Duty

Officer Robert Nielsen #445
March 15, 1977 - June 12, 2002

Officer Robert NielsenThe Chief of Police of the Chandler Police Department sadly announced the Line-of-Duty death of Officer Robert Joseph Nielsen. Officer Nielsen lost his life at 1:51 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, as a result of a traffic collision at Chandler Boulevard and Pennington while en route to a call for service at another accident scene.

Officer Robert Nielsen, 25, was hired by the Chandler Police Department on June 5, 2000. He graduated from the police academy on September 29, 2000, and was assigned badge #445. He worked as a patrol officer since completion of his field training in June of 2001. He was "a team player" and was "always willing to help out team members."

Officer Nielsen was born in Wadena, Minnesota. He attended and graduated from Westwood High School in 1995. Before becoming a Chandler Police Officer, he was a personal trainer at Arizona State University. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from Arizona State University in May of 2000. His interest in the martial arts dates back over a decade.

Officer Nielsen is survived by his wife Ann Marie, his parents Berdis and Teresa Nielsen, his sister Sherry Nielsen and brother Tim Nielsen. Officer Nielsen and his wife had no children.
